Had a great time today at the NC zoo. Took a day trip to visit the many different fuzzy faces of a lot of very hot animals. Many of them in fact were sleeping. Too hot to feel too frisky and energetic. But we had fun anyway, and despite our scolding Chloe still tried to bang on the glass at every exhibit to arouse them. We headed out at around 7 o'clock to hit the road. Not a bad trip at all and we arrived just 30 minutes after the park opened. The good thing about hitting a zoo in the middle of the blazing August heat is no one else does. So we didn't fight crowds at all which was nice. Abigail was insistent on visiting the bat exhibit as soon as possible since Mi-Mi and Pa-Pa's new house has bats in the chimney. They are her "new favorite", spoken in all the permanence of a 5 year old. We made our way around and really didn't begin to melt into puddles until after lunch. It's like it hit us all at once. All four of us began to reduce ourselves to taking turns w/ Chloe's hot old water in her sippy cup like travelers in a lost desert. Too cheap to spend 3 dollars on one tiny water bottle in the various vending machines...3 dollars!! Evidently Chloe was hydrated enough to leak out of her diaper so she made the home stretch last stops in just a tank top, diapers and sneakers( a look that I must say she just pulled off beautifully).
We filed into the car and I quickly pulled off my shoes and the girls shoes and socks to cool us as fast as I could. The heat of the car was intense and I don't know how families of earlier generations survived those kind of car rides. An emergency stop to the golden arches , a round of frozen strawberry lemonades and with in about 15 minutes both girls were passed out precious in their seats. It was a great memory making day for our little family. And as always...I have the pictures to prove it. :)
